Improve your waterfowl identification skills with an engaging field trip led by birding experts Greg Butcher and Larry Meade at the stunning Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge. During this 3-hour event, participants will have the opportunity to spot a diverse range of waterfowl, including Tundra Swans, Mallards, Northern Pintails, American Black Ducks, Hooded Mergansers, Buffleheads, and possibly even large rafts of Lesser Scaup in the Potomac River channel. The walk also includes insights into the distinctions between “waterfowl” and “waterbirds.”

Participation is capped at 20 people to provide an immersive and educational experience. While attendance at the Duck and Waterfowl Identification webinar on January 16 is encouraged, it’s not mandatory. Additionally, those eager to contribute further can volunteer for the Winter Waterfowl Count taking place on February 1-2.

Experience the timeless sounds of New Orleans blues and swing jazz with the Shenandoah Conservatory’s Hot Jazz Ensemble. Featuring select students and directed by Dr. Matthew Niess, professor of trombone and Jazz Studies, the ensemble will perform captivating pieces from the 1920s, 30s, and 40s. With trumpet, trombone, saxophone, piano, bass, and drums, these talented musicians carry on a legacy dating back to the 1950s, when the conservatory pioneered one of the nation’s first collegiate jazz ensembles. Shenandoah’s jazz groups have earned acclaim worldwide, touring countries like China, Japan, and France, and many graduates have built successful careers in jazz.

The concert is set for Sunday, January 19, at 3 p.m. at Emmanuel Episcopal Church’s Parish House, located at 105 East Washington St. in Middleburg. Reservations are recommended at (540-687-6297) but not required, and a $10 donation is suggested, though all are welcome.
