Virginia’s diverse landscape, from the highest mountains to the Eastern Shore, offers an extended fall foliage season. This season begins early in the higher elevations and moves eastward, with colors typically peaking between October 10 and October 31. However, the exact timing can vary based on factors like temperature and rainfall.
Virginia boasts a variety of deciduous trees, each contributing unique colors to the autumn palette. Here’s a quick guide to what you can expect:
November 9, 2024
This is our final fall foliage report for 2024. It’s the perfect time to enjoy the contrast between evergreen pines and the last clinging leaves against bare branches in the Virginia mountains. The Piedmont area lost many leaves to recent windy weather, but you can still find the warm hues of amber and brown, hinting at the coming winter grays. In the Coastal Plain, you’ll see more vibrant reds, oranges, and golds, with many oaks still retaining their green east of Richmond.
Even as leaves fall, late autumn showcases its own blend of colors and textures. Look out for the stark white trunks of sycamores against the vivid blue sky, the spidery yellow flowers of witch hazel, the pale blue, berry-like cones on redcedar’s dark green needles, and the fluffy white blooms of saltbush along eastern roadways.
Enjoy these November photos, and stay tuned for our next fall foliage update in September 2024!
