Get ready to experience DC’s stunning display of cherry blossoms! 🌸 The National Park Service predicts peak bloom for the iconic Yoshino cherry trees between March 28 and 31 this year.
Peak bloom is the magical time when 70% of the Yoshino blossoms are in full bloom. This fleeting period can last several days, but weather conditions like wind and rain may shorten it. The National Park Service tracks the development of the blossoms through five stages, starting from “green bud” and ending at “puffy blossoms,” signaling the blooms are ready to shine.
Last year, the cherry blossoms surprised us with an early bloom, peaking on March 17—the second earliest on record after March 15, 1990!
DC’s cherry blossom tradition dates back to 1912, when Japan gifted 3,020 trees as a symbol of friendship. Today, about 3,500 trees, mostly of the Yoshino and Kwanzan varieties, thrive along the Tidal Basin, creating a breathtaking spectacle each spring.
From March 20 to April 13, the National Cherry Blossom Festival returns with an exciting lineup of events, including a parade, kite festival, and sake celebration. It’s the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in the beauty of spring.
This season may feel a little different due to a $113 million rehabilitation project underway at the Tidal Basin. Over three years, 300 cherry trees will need to be removed, but don’t worry—455 trees will be replanted, including 274 cherry trees, ensuring future generations can enjoy this beloved tradition.
While you soak in the beauty, please remember to protect these delicate blooms:
Mark your calendars, pack a picnic, and get ready to marvel at the natural wonder of Washington, DC’s cherry blossoms. This is the season you won’t want to miss! 🌸
